Memo to Members: February Update #2
February 23, 2021
ID CARDS
To avoid any costs to HBPA members and their staff, the Board of the HBPA has agreed to share with Woodbine Entertainment the cost of producing Identification cards. These Identification cards will identify iAGCO licensed participants. More details to follow.
NON LASIX RACES
Earlier this week, Woodbine notified the industry that their three Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series races “Win and You’re In” for 2021 will be run as Non-Lasix events.
For those Owners or Trainer’s intending to participate in the win and you’re in stakes, the Woodbine Mile (scheduled for September 18), the Summer Stakes and Natalma Stakes (both scheduled for September 19) must take note of the federal regulations which require horses once entered into the EIPH program to remain on Lasix for a minimum of 100 days.
Therefore, any hopefuls will need to be registered on the EIPH program with the AGCO on or before June 7th, 2021 in order to come off.
Please note, this is the only change to Lasix for the 2021 racing season. All other races, stakes and events remain eligible for optional Lasix use.
CBD AND THC SUPPLEMEMTS
We would like to remind ALL trainers and backstretch workers that the use of any cannabis, hemp oil products and/or supplements continue to be prohibited. These include and are not limited to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).
Although cannabis is permitted for restricted use in humans, there are currently no veterinary cannabis products approved by Health Canada. Therefore, using a product such as CBD supplements or hemp, containing either of these chemicals may result in a positive drug test.
Also, we remind those who use cannabis to take extra precautionary steps to guard against potential contamination by washing hands thoroughly after touching any cannabis products.
As always, the HBPA strongly recommends consulting your veterinarian on any decisions to administer supplements and/or medications to a racehorse.
